Core Web Vitals and Rankings: What the Data Actually Says

Every few months someone declares that speed is (or isn’t) a ranking factor, and the debate restarts. Let’s settle it with what the data actually shows across the sites we manage.

It’s a tiebreaker, not a trump card

Google has been clear: page experience decides close races. If two pages satisfy intent equally, the faster one wins. But no amount of millisecond-shaving outranks better content and stronger authority. We’ve never seen a site jump from page three to page one on speed alone.

Where speed genuinely moves the needle

Two places: mobile, where slow pages bleed users before they convert, and large catalogs, where crawl budget is finite and faster pages get crawled more deeply. For e-commerce sites with 10k+ URLs, cutting server response time measurably increased the share of product pages Google crawled weekly — and indexed.

The practical standard

Pass the thresholds on real devices — Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5s, Interaction to Next Paint under 200ms, Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1 — then stop optimizing and go work on content. Chasing a perfect 100 is the most expensive distraction in technical SEO.
