Link Building in 2026: What Still Earns Links
Link building has a spam problem, and Google knows it. The tactics that scaled in 2020 — mass guest posting, link insertions bought by the dozen — are either ignored or actively harmful now. Here’s what still earns real editorial links.
Original data wins
Our highest-performing campaigns are data studies: surveys of 1,000+ professionals, analyses of proprietary client data, industry benchmarks nobody else publishes. One study for a SaaS client earned 80+ referring domains and gets cited in journalist articles two years later. Data is the only linkable asset that appreciates.
Free tools and calculators
A genuinely useful free tool — a calculator, a grader, a template — earns links for years with zero ongoing effort. It also converts: tool users become email subscribers, subscribers become demos. Compare that to a guest post that earns one link and zero traffic.
What to stop doing
Stop buying links, stop mass outreach with the same template as everyone else, and stop counting links instead of referring domains. Ten links from ten real publications beat a hundred links from sites that exist to sell links.
